The oil spill at Prince William Sound is real and devastating event that happened on my birthday, March 24, 1989.
I remember seeing the aftermath and the animals coated in oil. It was heartbreaking. It is why I wanted to include it in the novel: our environment is so special and we, humans, need to protect it and be careful.
The grounding of the tanker Exxon Valdez spilled approx. over 10 million gallons into the water.

Imogen helped Jack by giving him access to some citrus fruit since she had the ability to teleport from location to locations, keeping it fresh.
Jack London spent time in Dawson City, which inspired his stories The Call of the Wild and White Fang.
The lack of vitamin foods led to scurvy.
Imogen and Thuy meet three Freshwater Tails in the Yukon River who help Imogen locate her mother's whereabouts.
